Fitness Industry in India has witnessed exceptional growth over the last decade given the adoption of technology & increase in internet & mobile penetration. Consumers have started taking interest in new products & services being launched to stay healthy & fit. A lot of these products provide consumers with new & innovative ways to stay healthy. Besides visiting gyms, consumers are also subscribing to services such as Zumba, Kickboxing, Martial Arts, functional workout, Aerobics & Yoga( to name a few).
The market is highly un-organised & lacks defined structure to bifurcate between varied products & services. A decade ago, the market was dominated & controlled by a few large players be it gym, health clubs, fitness centres & fitness equipment providers. The trend is changing now with the entry of small players & new start-ups using technology & mobile internet to deliver fitness solutions.
Key Growth Drivers
A large proportion of the population follow a sedentary lifestyle & indulge in minimal/no workout. As a result, they are getting exposed to lifestyle diseases such as high cholesterol(bad), diabetes, high blood pressure & risk of heart stroke. Thanks to technology & information age, people are becoming aware of the ill-effects of no/minimal workout & unhealthy eating. As such they have started focussing on fitness to avoid lifestyle-related diseases, deal with stress and strike a balance between professional and personal lives. There is a growing interest to increase stamina, endurance and enhance core strength. This has increased subscription to gyms, health clubs & fitness centres.
Subscription to gyms which was considered a luxury in the past is now becoming a way of life for several people. Increase in disposable income of professionals in age band of 20 to 45 years has given rise to demand of fitness products & services. It is expected that market will grow by CAGR of 9.3% to reach volume of US $ 1296 Mn by FY 2022.
Current pain points
Although the scope for market is huge, the market is still plagued by a lot of operating inefficiencies.
1) Time Arbitrage :A gym member subscribing for annual membership visits gym for workout for 2 to 3 times a week on an average which makes gym operate at only 40% of capacity. This has created an arbitrage & gyms & fitness centers are making quick money by adding on members beyond their capacity. Such a strategy lacks focus on customer delivery & satisfaction.
2) Focus on personal training: With increase in competition, gyms have started personal trainers services which constitutes around 45% of total revenue. As a result, members who are relying on general training do not get correct workout guidance from the trainers available on the floor. They end up doing exercise in wrong postures & form which defeats the whole purpose of subscribing to gym. The members, who can afford( only 20% of total lot) end up subscribing to the services of personal trainers which increases the cost of gym ownership by 50% on an annualised basis.
3) No Guidance on Diet: Diet plays a major role(70%) in achieving weight loss goals. Most gyms focus only on workout/exercise & do not have a product or solution to curate a diet plan for its customers depending upon their fitness goals. In some cases, trainers who have built an association with client may guide them what to eat. However, there is no motivation for trainers to monitor & evaluate their diet since they get paid only for the workout they curate.
