If you exercise, walk everyday, avoid drinking & smoking, you are doing well & chances of having heart disease would minimize. Everything boils down to diet. In my previous blogs, I have always mentioned that a right composition of food is vital for the intake of right nutrients & live a healthy lifestyle.

Most of the queries I receive is focused on whether eating high carb, low fat increases the chances of heart disease. I advise everyone that to have healthy lifestyle, one should focus on protein rich, low carb, high fibre, high good fat diet.

A large number of people do not know the difference between complex & processed carbs. Processed carbs are really harmful for body & one should always prefer complex carbs over processed. One of the examples where you can reduce the chances of heart disease is to replace cornflakes with white oats in the morning meal. Corn Flakes is nothing, but processed version of carbs.

The effect that carb content has on blood sugar level depends upon Glycemic Index(GI) & Glycemic Load(GL). The food with high GI & GL spikes the sugar level in the body. So, the fast digesting & processed foods such as cornflakes, pastries, donuts & white bread increase the blood sugar level in the body. Foods similar to them having GI level of  70 + must be avoided.

Food with high GI levels are always unhealthy choice since such foods are processed & low in nutrients. This may not be the case always, yet we should also consider the Glycemic Load while selecting which food to eat. GL compares impact that two foods with same level of carbs have on blood sugar level. GL is generally calculated by multiplying GI with grams of carb & dividing by 100. So the food with high level of GI & GL is a complete “ NO” to consume.

Food with high GI & GL level keeps the insulin up in the body whole day to lower down the spike in sugar level caused by high carb food. Consumption of such foods is unhealthy & creates high chances of heart diseases.
