Are you compromising your child’s health?

With stressful lifestyle & demanding work pressure, people have forgotten to prioritize their health. We can now witness increase in nuclear families with both parents so busy with their professional deliverables that they are not able to give time to their personal & children’s nutritional needs. As such they face problem of paucity of time to indulge in any sort of physical activity &/or prepare nutrition dense food for themselves & family.

In this technology era, we have online solutions for everything right from on demand taxi, grocery delivery to delivery of packaged & outside food at your door steps. So what is the best option these gig economy professionals have?  In order to deliver that important project or be on time for that Monday morning meeting, most of us prefer to skip preparing breakfast & instead use Uber eats or Swiggy to order a bite without knowing what are we actually consuming. Ordering from outside/pre-packaged foods has become a regular practice. In their efforts to save time & have a filler, these time pressed folks have also developed this habit of eating outside food among their children as well. This has far reaching negative impact on the health of these professionals & their children with higher chances of children getting exposed to lifestyle diseases such as Obesity, Sugar, Blood Pressure & other body malfunctions at an early age.

Besides, gig professionals in order to save time prefer buying packaged foods & other groceries from super stores without reading the food labels. Most of these foods are calorie dense & contain high sugar/sodium content or preservatives which are bad for overall health. A recent global survey has found that packaged foods in India have high level of saturated fats, sugar & salt.

In a recent NITI- Aayog UNICEF Report, half of India’s Adolescent are either short, thin or obese. 80% of Adolescents also suffer from one or more macro nutrient deficiencies such as Iron, folate, Zinc, Vitamin A, B12 & D. Most of these children have poor diet & prefer consuming fast food & junk stuff including aerated drinks, fried foods & sweets which are calorie dense. Some of the most serious revelations include:

  1. Less than 10% of adolescents consume fruits & eggs
  2. Leafy greens are consumed by less than 25% of Adolescent population
  3. Milk products are consumed by 50% of adolescents daily
  4. Hardly indulge in sports & other physical activity
  5. Adolescent girls suffers from huge nutritional deprivation

Food safety & standard authority of India has already taken reasonable steps to ensure that sellers are barred from advertising junk food within 50 metres of school campuses. Besides Junk food has also been banned in school canteens.
