Folks in wealthy & Industrialized countries are dying younger. This trend is specifically eminent in the U.S. over the last 3 years in spite of the fact that the US spends on healthcare more than any other country in the world.

Overweight  & Obesity has been one of the primary drivers for fall in life expectancy. 72% of the Americans are overweight & 40% are obese. People are becoming overweight & obese at earlier  ages:

Alone in the US, obesity impacts

  1. 14% in age group of 2 to 5 years old
  2. 18% in age group of 6 to 9 years old
  3. 21% in age group of 12 to 19 years old

Even in a developing country like India, lifestyle diseases are taking a toll on adolescents with half of them are either short, thin or obese. 80% of adolescents are having vitamin & mineral deficiency.

Globally, around 4.7 billion people are suffering from obesity!

Thankfully folks are now aware of the negative impacts of junk food, sugar & importance of physical activities & have started subscribing to gyms, health clubs & online fitness models with the hope of improving their health & well being. Subscribing to these gyms & health clubs are akin to marginal utility curve of consume for a particular need which fades out with passage of time. There are numerous reasons supporting this fact.

These alternative fitness solutions promises a paradigm shift in health quotient of the clients & good news is that a lot of these clients also undergo huge body transformations. However, the bigger question is what lies ahead. I am going to discuss this in detail:

Most gyms & health clubs follow a business model of promoting indefinite life cycle value of clients, so that they keep on building the revenue books with a promise of helping them achieve their fitness goals. Besides, they also make clients subscribe to personal training. It is a known fact that 35% to 40% of their clients subscribe to these personal training services. Life cycle for these services can range from 9 to even 2 years. Even post transformation/weight loss, clients still depend upon trainers to maintain their fitness level, since gyms do not make any concerted efforts to motivate & educate on various aspects of workout & nutrition. In other words, gyms focus on micro aspects of workout without motivating & inspiring clients to embrace lifestyle change. There have been instances of folks re-gaining weight after achieving their fitness goals. In addition to this, gym trainers seldom take efforts to advise on nutrition.

With the advent of technology, we are witnessing lot of recorded video content aided workout training solutions being offered to fitness aspirants. These solutions are either a group based workout session or curated solutions. However, these solutions fail to address the real pain points:

  1. Workout videos cannot address the problem of correct workout postures.
  2. Streamed pre recorded video content does not explain a particular workout impacts which part of the body.
  3. Does not provide any real motivation to client.
  4. Does not educate on diet related aspects, rather focus on telling what to consume without sharing real impact of the body.
  5. Does not evaluate clients based on real time body’s biochemistry rather focus on using AI to offer intelligent fitness solutions.
  6. Do not equip clients to continue with their fitness journey without any supervision. In order words, fails to help clients transit to DIY-fitness model. This forces the client to continue subscribing to these services. Those who do not continue generally see re-gaining weight post expiry of the subscription period.
  7. Focus is on increasing the customer retention ratio rather than helping them make independent to maintain their fitness level post transformation.

Ideally focus should be on helping them make a sustainable lifestyle change & addressing more clients in embracing these positive changes.
