How to handle redundancy in an interview ?

Redundancy impacts your confidence level besides hitting your career growth. Therefore, it is natural for aggrieved employees ( who have been recently made redundant) to adopt negative mindset/bad habits during interview processes. If you are asked questions about redundancy in an interview, do not make the usual mistake of showing yourself as a victim or coming across as angry/bitter. No employer wants to hire candidates with negative attitude. So how do you tackle redundancy?

  1. Deal with it: It is a reality that you have accept, cope up with rejection & move on for something better must be coming your way. Redundancy is common nowadays since no one can assume a job for life. Moreover with high market volatility, redundancy is pretty normal.
  2. Work on what you can: Redundancy has nothing to do with you & your senior management is devastated to see you go. Perhaps your personality & skills are of not much use to your employer. So what is stopping you from upgrading your skills? Get enrolled into some sort of professional development/training & skill upgradation program. Working with  a career & job search coach at Improvisador can make a difference in cracking those tough interviews.
  3. Build a story: You should be prepared to answer the most obvious question in an interview:” What did you left your job?”. Work on building a story around it so that you do not sound unprepared answering the question & lose your credibility. Ponder upon reasons for redundancy in advance & discuss it with your friends &/or career coach. Revisit & polish your response & come up with a narrative in a professional & positive way.
  4. Show your worth: Be simple & confident & showcase you are a true value generating asset available in the job market. Never feel bad about being redundant & spell out clearly that it was a positive learning experience. Do not sound like a desperate candidate but an available candidate which can add value & create winning synergies.
