How to avoid Cliche on your Resume?

Writing professional resume is not an easy task even for professional resume writers. There has to be clear demarcation in the language that is regarded as professional & that has begun its descent into cliche. Many phrases such as Industry thought leader, excellent communication skills etc  which were earlier considered modern & latest concept patronised by MBA professors have not been over used by every second resume reviewed by hiring managers. To add to this wittiness, resumes is generally populated by lot of keywords consisting of hard skills, soft skills, industry phrases & jargons & of course Cliches!

So the questions arises what to include in your resume & what to give a miss. Sometimes, it is easy to to write your resume in a conversation language detailing about what you have achieved rather than using corporate boilerplate language boasting what you are capable off. Some phrases/jargons that should be avoided:

• Result Oriented Professional is one of the most meaningless phrases since everyone who works as a professional is trying to achieve results.
• Curriculum Vitae is the most pointless cliche of all. It is a waste of valuable white space since everyone would know that your CV is a CV
• Reading & Socialising adds nothing credible to your career document. If you have to include your personal interest in your resume, it should be something that creates a lasting impact. Reading & Socialising is something which almost everyone indulges into, you should include something that reflects your characteristics. You can include something specific to your achievements that showcases your passion rather than describing generic activity
• Excellent Communication Skills is something which you need to demonstrate through your interaction & demonstration. Writing such phrases in resume is meaningless.
• Strong work ethic is nothing but boasting your work philosophy which does not create a value in the mind of reader. Telling the reader/audience that you are committed, dedicated & highly motivated does not help. Describing a success story that showcases your commitment is a great way to demonstrate your strong work culture.
• Proven success track record: How do you measure success? Obviously not by writing such phrases in your resume. Rather you should pencil down some specific achievements & how it has benefits your stakeholders in tangible ways.
• Can work individually or in teams: You have to be specific mentioning about how you achieved something as an individual or how you have contributed to team work.
• References available upon request: If you have cleared the interview & have received an offer, you will be asked to share details of referrals. Using space to mention that phrase is not a wise strategy
