Hiring trends to watch in Year 2020

It is very difficult to ignore emerging hiring technology alongside the candidate driven job market. The old & traditional hiring process is no longer valid & corporations that do not embrace the new trends will be left behind.

With automation taking a giant lead forward, corporations have ample opportunities to optimize hiring & recruitment processes. Armed with cutting edge tools, corporations can streamline processes, eliminate inefficiencies & leverage both internal & external talent. To successfully embrace this rapidly changing technology, a new hiring approach is needed. As a resume & career coach, I am detailing below new age hiring trends that are taking shape:

  1. Leading companies are emphasizing on skills: Leading & Fortune 500 companies such as Google, Apple & Netflix are doing away with the degree requirements & instead focusing on evaluating technical, business, administrative & management skills required for target roles ranging from software development, engineering to accounting. To leverage benefits of skilled based evaluation, corporations are customizing skill assessment tests. Such evaluation ensures human efforts are decreased while reducing bias in hiring decisions by objectively evaluating a potential fit.
  2. Inclusive Hiring: Business leaders are now focusing on diversity & inclusive hiring.  Given that hiring & developing talent has become a critical success factor for business growth, boards & CEOs are increasing their focus on cultivating talent & inclusive work cultures. A recent survey found that 76% of the respondents believed that board diversity will enhance the performance of the corporations. It is expected that in the year 2020 inclusive hiring is going to take center stage given that online posting for diversity & inclusion job posting increased by 30% between Aug’ 2018 & Aug’ 2019.
  3. Corporations are redefining the interview process: To attract & retain talent that can drive employee diversity in the year 2020, corporations are gearing up & defining strategic inclusion & diversity plans. This required revisiting & modernizing the interview process. Traditionally, candidates/job seekers are being evaluated based on their social status ranging from gender, potential to racial within the few minutes they speak resulting in flawed technique of selection/hiring. With corporations prioritizing diversity & inclusive hiring, new methods of interviewing candidates such as blind interviewing & team based assessment are becoming the preferred ways of evaluating candidates. Under blind interview process, technology removes candidate’s identifying information from typed responses to the questions thereby eliminating opportunities for bias. Team based hiring is an important concept to reduce the impact of an interviewer’s bias. Corporations that can successfully implement objective based assessment can match the talent with required skills.
