Does your brand matter? A deep dig into what you are actually selling to prospective employers

You have spent considerable amount of time working for a big brand. You are now scouting for better opportunities. So what is your strategy? You make an impressive resume & start sending job applications at various online portals. What are you actually selling?  Are you trying to convince prospective employer why you are fit for them? or how your skills can be put to the best use that enhances their brand equity?

In such scenarios, you never focus on leveraging on your strength & creating your personal brand. Instead, you strive to aggressively market your skills without making employers self-evaluate how hiring you can be a win-win proposition for both you & the corporations. In other words, you never provided a level playing field where employers are keen to take you on board for that personal brand you have created for yourself.  Hence, there are higher chances that your prospective employer foresees you as an expense rather than an investment.

So how do you create your personal brand & a distinctive credibility for yourself in the job market? The idea is to control your own brand & tailor it to work best for you.

You do not need to follow a marketing book/journal to find out how you build your personal brand. You need to just pursue the following:

  1. Make concerted efforts as to where & when you should be active. For job seekers, LinkedIn, Glass door & handful of other portals are places where you can be active & create your distinctive identity. It does not mean using these portals to only apply for jobs. You can very well use such portals for information sharing, blogging, expressing your views & networking. This helps in showcasing & presenting your skills & expertise which enable employers to evaluate your core competency/strength.
  2. Use social media constructively to let people recognise what you really are on both professional and personal front . For instance, if you have a passion for travelling, try to put your travel story or blogs describing your recent  adventures. This helps you create a unique image for yourself where employers can see your real worth.

All these steps helps prospective employers to recognise the value you bring to the table without depicting your desperate interest in working for them. As a matter of fact, this thoughtful personal branding strategy allow prospective employers to consider hiring you as an long term investment with favourable returns.
