If you are an senior or C-suite executive exploring for the next big challenge & looking to update your resume, the following guidelines will help you get that winning resume:

  1. Marketing your resume: Strong marketing gameplan still holds the top spot when it comes to writing a resume to get positive results. This include,
    • Summary ideas captured in a strong, single & bold sentences
    • Bullets that begin with metrics & impact( not end)
    • Phrases/columns that  communicate general key points such as where/how much/how many etc..
  1. Your resume is your marketing blueprint not a historical narrative. It is built to drive conversation towards roles you want to explore/take up. You should focus on:
    •  Creating visually appealing & well organised resumes that provide fundamental context-scale or scope you managed or handled & skill & competency alignment with your target role.
    • Front load metric based results & achievements vs what you did( Objective-Action-Result model vs Action only model).
  1. Your resume should not be an exact reflection of your LinkedIn profile. Your resume should not be uploaded on your LinkedIn profile ( showing that you are desperately looking for a job). Your resume is written in implied first person while LinkedIn is written in first personal informal or third person. You can find more about how to optimise your LinkedIn profile here.
  1. Online personal websites are being asked more often. It is a great branding strategy to grab yourname.com & have your own web portfolio. It makes it easy to communicate value your carry, your photograph, your contact information- without drip marketing.
  1. The top of your resume should communicate your scope of interest, ideal company size, industry of interest to you & scale of your expertise. For example : Chief Executive Officer/ Automotive brands/ P&L – US $ 25 million.
  1. One page resumes are generally preferred by PE firms, boards & generally first introductions. Some international markets do prefer having a two page or three page resume.
  1. What are the top three or five things you wish to do in your next role. Let us say Growth strategy, corporate development, Mergers & Acquisitions. Brainstorm your top accomplishment with these heads & showcase them in your resume. Focus on what your want to do next- your preferred job roles & responsibilities & think about your achievements in those heads/categories.
  1. Senior executives who wish to showcase their skill set & competencies across C-suite positions, advisory roles, board appointments, private equity & venture capital roles are becoming more & more popular & are being created to demonstrate an executive’s leadership experience. Presenting your diverse expertise promotes meaningful conversations showcasing your expertise across several functions.
  1. Your executive resume creates the initial first perception that will drive future conversations. By focusing on the kind of roles you want to target & writing to those positions & companies, you will ensure the target audience visits your profile.
