Looking for a new job brings enthusiasm amongst job seekers with expectation of growing, succeeding & moving up in career ladder. Job search sometimes becomes so passionate that job seekers strive to look for an opportunity that gives them accelerated growth without evaluating the reason to switch from current role.
Frequent job shift for the sake of salary hike, exploring new sector, looking out for accommodating boss & better/flexible working hours makes job seeker a job hopper. However, grass is always greener on the other side. But are the above mentioned reasons real motivation for frequent job shifts?
To some extent these reasons hold true. During earlier times, professionals looking for stability used to stay at one corporation for a long period of time with a decent salary hike. However with passage of time, a larger proportion of professionals prefer to switch jobs quite often to have more than usual pay hike. For such professionals, switching cost is quite low & then do not think twice before making that unwanted shift. Due to this reason, lot of corporations do not prefer to hire job hoppers. However during this process they also miss-out competent & skilled manpower.
If you are not satisfied with current job/profile, your career is lacking, you do not fit in corporate culture &/or you are managed by boss who is less competent & experienced than you, you may consider job switch as preferred option to safeguard your career interests/goals.
To some extent if there is cultural misfit or you are managed by incompetent boss, job shift may be justifiable. After all, you can investigate about external factors such as profitability, brand & service impacting a company. However, it is difficult to evaluate internal uncontrollable factors such as cultural code, working environment & above all attitude/skill set of your manager.
However it is important to step back & evaluate yourself based on following:
- Have your past bosses under appreciated you?
- Have you run into similar problems with your colleagues in the past?
- Have you felt unchallenged, or under utilised, in each of your past roles?
If you answered yes to 2 or all 3 of these questions then you need to re-think on your approach.
So what do you do?
Change your attitude for couple of months & find out if some activity or task gives you fun or satisfaction? What you like most about your current role? Write these things down every day and try to recall them when you get pissed off.
If after doing these things for couple of months you feel something good about your current place of work, then you have taken a pragmatic approach towards your long term career growth.
