Lot of my clients ask me if they should include resume on their LinkedIn profile? My advice is not to do so. Here are some supportive facts worth considering:
1)Company specific details/information should not be disclosed publicly
Various professionals not keen to share certain specific details publicly. Besides, a lot of my clients working in management/strategy consulting even prefer not to mention the name of their clients on LinkedIn profile as well as resume. Content included in resume should be very precise & specific related to particular organisations. As such a lot of employers would not be too comfortable to share their private data & information such as information on budget, revenues & profit. Besides, it is better to share company details exclusively through direct distribution of resume rather than published on a platform which is accessible to millions of readers.
LinkedIn is a perfect place to showcase your expertise, skill set & achievements, apart from disclosing some specific details. For instance you may write achieved revenue of $ 12.5 mn in FY 2019 in your resume & replace the same with something like this “ Achieved multi million dollar revenue”.
2) A standard resume does not meet unique skill sets/hiring needs
“ One size fits all” does not apply to resume. Target audience/potential employers may give your resume a miss if content misses the skill set/expertise required. A standard resume can be more harmful than doing benefit to you. A tailor made resume makes sense since it can be customized for each distinctive opportunity. If a prospective employer comes across a profile & does not find it in-line with their requirements they may not be able to see a value & inherent benefit.
3) Missed opportunity to build network
Resume when posted on LinkedIn profile may be read by thousands of people apart from target audience. Not disclosing your resume initially & sharing the same when there is a potential interest & request is a far better opportunity. This will enable you to customize your resume in alignment with the opportunity
LinkedIn profile & resume goes hand in hand. The correct way would be to make your LinkedIn profile attractive & strong which may create interest from potential employers. Once interest in your profile is communicated, you can directly share the resume with the potential audience/employers.
