Common Job Search Myths

Job search is surrounded by a lot of preconceived notions & assumptions. LinkedIn is flooded by a lot of job coaches & resume writers. With advice by all these so-called “ experts”, there is no doubt that jobseekers are perplexed by various suggestions & feedback floating around.

Our job search strategy & advice is based on data based research & regular interaction with recruiters, hiring managers & headhunting firms. We are discussing below some job search myths -Busted!

  1. I require a resume which can be used to apply for multiple roles

Normally recruiters/headhunters/hiring managers take hardly 7 seconds to eliminate first round unworthy resumes. In order to make your resume pass through the initial assessment, please make sure your resume clearly demonstrate the following since most of the recruiters are in a rush given that they have thousands of resume to assess:

  • Roles you are targeting to apply.
  • Skill set & competencies that align with the target job requirements.
  • Metrics driven achievements that enable the recruiters to connect the dot & see how your profile is a great fit for the role.
  1.  Job hopping is bad

Handful of years ago, employers used to value loyalty & vintage & it was hard for the job seekers with frequent switches(every 2 to 3 years) to convince the prospective employer/recruiters that considering them would not be a risk. However in the current scenario, this does not hold good.

Consider a situation: If you were hired to develop a new sales region & your resume spells out that particular region is doing well/growing, recruiters would not question your job search. In other words, if your resume showcases the challenge or problem set you were working on & how you overcame the challenge /solve the problem, the recruiter would accept the fact that it is time for the next challenge. Staying with a company long term directly impacts your earning potential:

  • Huge salary increases come when your relationship with your employer hovers from 2 to 5 years.
  • You are likely to get a minimal growth if consider to change job after spending 5 years or more with an employer

    3) Resume is the most vital document for job search

In today’s technology centred world, 70% of the recruiters search talent online. Majority of recruiters use various social media platforms to screen candidates. Therefore having a great resume is not going to help you land up with the job of your choice. If you do not have online/digital proof of what your resume claims, you will miss a potential irreparable opportunity. If your social media handles have some controversial posts- you have a very grim chance of getting a call back/making it to next round.

Focus on capitalising your social media by including posts that further augments your credibility & substantiate your skills & competencies.
