How you will fare up with bunch of candidates who have implemented/used new resume & techniques to attract employer’s attention? How do you know what works best for you? The following would help you evaluate the gap & how to fill those gap to as a prepared candidate for the position/role you wish to explore:
1.) Evaluate your current skills & abilities
Working at one place & in one position for a longer period of time means you have assumed the skills in which you have expertise & those in which you don’t. In order to evaluate what you currently offer & what are gaps, research on the target jobs, responsibilities/deliverable & how you offer a potential fit. Once you can evaluate your strengths, weakness & value you can offer, you can take reasonable steps to modify existing/acquire new skills & stand out in this competitive job market.
2) Build & nurture your external brand
Having worked in one organisation/role for longer period of time, you have built a strong internal brand. However when scouting for a external role, you should take steps to build external brand. You should start sharing your knowledge through blogs/online content, take voluntary participation as a speaker in various seminars/events, share articles, participate in discussion on LinkedIn & network with people in other sector/industries relevant to your job role. Besides, leverage the power of social media to write blogs on your expertise, tweet, articles, podcasts & videos. These steps will not only allow you to build a personal external brand, but also help you being visible & searched which a normal job search will not allow.
3) Get involved with a professional association
Register with a professional association that will help you expose your current skills & augment them to expose to larger trends in the field. Being an active member &/or head of such professional association/body shall help you build a credible & selling resume.
4) Build a sound LinkedIn profile
Include all your skills, expertise, abilities & talent in your LinkedIn profile. Give plenty of skill endorsements to professionals in your network. This shows what skills you value & how you have worked with others. Try to connect with more professionals in your industry/sector/job functions.
5) Meet up with people outside your industry/sector
As an executive resume consultant & coach, I have to ask a lot of questions from my clients related to change in sector/industry such as: are you looking for change in industry or exploring just another job? Do you have interests outside your current industry or have you developed vision for your career? Spend good time with meeting & connecting with professionals from different industry/sector to evaluate how do they see/visualize the industry dynamics.
6) Know yourself
Corporations generally hire professionals to solve a pain point/problem &/or to fill a need. Before you apply for a potential position, please evaluate your how your skill set/expertise can solve the problem corporation is intending to solve? What is your value? What differentiates you from others? Can you support your claims.
7) What is your passion?
Evaluate what excites you & what you love to do! In other words, what is your passion? When you do so, your bring energy & position discussion in every interaction you have with other professionals. People following their passion attract other like minded professionals & develop that great networking opportunities.
8) Constantly learn & grow
You stop your growth if you are complacent with your current level of skills & expertise. Always strive to keep on building on your existing skills. Have an annual strategic development plan in place so as to learn & develop new skills /augment your current skills & have that thought leadership approach.
9) Research about what prospective employer values
Use LinkedIn & other professional portals such as glassdoor to research about the company, its executives & business. What do they care most? How do they evaluate progress/success- through numbers or team progress? Read all company press release & watch all videos. Note down the keywords your hear/read. Speak in their language & clarify how you can help them solve their problem/leverage market opportunities for them.
10) Structure your resume
When you work for a corporation for a longer period of time, it is not easy to pencil down your accomplishments/achievements. However in order to stand out in the job market, target to include most recent & relevant achievements. Focus on including your experience matching the opportunity in hand & strategic market your capabilities in your resume
11) Write your career story
When you are exploring potential employment opportunities through networking, do not use your resume to introduce yourself. It is a wrong tool to start your job search. A better approach would be to introduce yourself with your career evolution & story that would help people /professionals to know you & forward your profile to connections in their network that may help you secure job of your choice.
