It is common practice that as you start growing in your career & adding more skill set, expertise & experience your resume becomes lengthy, cluttered & disordered. The content keeps on adding up & key details/core strengths/proud achievements gets buried & the resume look too clumsy. If your resume looks too clumsy or sloppy, it’s time to re-haul/re-write your resume. Making changes/amendments here & there will not do any good to your profile.
You should start with evaluating every piece of your resume & question yourself “ does this content relates to target audience/audience in hand”, if not, prefer to remove the same from your resume
Some details/achievements create inclination/joy & interest in the mind of readers. Focus on showcasing such facts/accomplishments with enthusiasm & pride.
When you rewrite your resume, you can display your achievements/derived measurable results/value you created in an orderly way which can be easily evaluated for a potential fit/employment.
I am detailing some useful guidelines to re-organize your resume which depicts a clear value to the reader:
- Rebuild the resume so that your career story, your skill set/expertise, any success story & kind of roles you are exploring are briefly summarized in 2 to 3 lines on the top of the document. This should be attractive & credible enough to create that interest in the reader to read through the details of your experience otherwise your resume would find itself in trash
- Include link to your LinkedIn profile, blog &/or website on top
- Include awards, recognition & appreciation on the top of each experience.
- Display & highlight top & most relevant content at the beginning of the document.
- Organize information into different sections with clear headings.
- Each bullet point mentioned should depict an action you took & impact/value you created or benefit your employer derived from your actions.
- In case your have 15 plus years of work experience, do not include details of experience beyond 12 years. Experiences during your initial phase of career may be clubbed / mentioned very briefly.
- Put even spacing in the document so that your content can breathe & be read easily.
