Work from Home/Anywhere: The new normal

The Pandemic has created uncertainty & turbulence across the world. Workforce has been forced to work from home remotely & it is quite unsure how long such a situation will last. For a lot of them, remote working can be altogether first & new experience & quite unsettling as well. Dealing with this unexpected level of isolation can be challenging specifically when faced with health related anxieties.

Employers must take all reasonable steps to support their newly adaptable remote teams with regular check-ins, update them with advice & open communication channels through online platforms video conferencing, emails & calls.

How should both employers & employees embrace this new normal? We are sharing some tips that can help smoothly transition to this remote working/ work from home model:

  1. There are no rules: These are challenging times & there are no defined rules to be followed. You are open to take advice but implement only what is best for you. Every individual is different & has a different working environment at home.
  2. Develop & follow a schedule: Although working from home brings an element of flexibility, you should focus on building a schedule & routine with a time to sign-in & sign-off. You should strive not to continue working beyond sign off time. Besides, you should plan/earmark a designated area for work which should be separate from your living room.
  3. Health is important: Next some months are really vital & it is important that you maintain a balance between your professional commitment, personal life & your health. You should try to implement the following:
    • Indulge in one hour workout &/or mindfulness(meditation/yoga) on a daily basis.
    • Take small breaks away from break.
    • Step out of your room to refresh.
  4. Be connected: In order to avoid a situation of isolation & depression, focus on connecting with colleagues over video call at least once a day. These online meetings do not have to be official team members but just an opportunity to catch up with each other.
  5. Make the best of the available time: During this new normal, you will have more than usual time at home at your disposal. Therefore you should plan how you can make best use of available time. You can either do some online courses to upgrade your skills & /or look at the bigger picture, assessing your life/career objectives.
  6. Overcome your stress: The new normal is going to say for some months now. So in order to avoid burnout, you should focus on having some time for yourself. Spend some time in nature or in sunlight whenever possible, indulge in exercise & healthy eating , have sound sleep & keep yourself hydrated. Stay in touch with people close to you & e-connect with them on a regular basis.
