Tips on Interviewing for C-suite Role

Interviewing at C-level is entirely different. As an outside/external candidate for an executive position, your audience does not know you yet. You just have a small time window to win their trust. I am sharing a few tips that can act as a foundation to provide you a level playing field with which to do it.

C-suite interviews focus on a combination of metric driven accomplishments that align with the role & responsibilities of the position you are being considered & demonstrating your leadership/mentorship qualities/skills. You have to make them impressed by you, like you & above all trust you.

  1. Make them invest their energy in you: While beginning the interaction ask them to help you understand in their words what kind of person they are looking for & summary of the role. Take short notes of what they say. These will be your key discussion points during the interview.
  2. Do not share your exact salary, rather mention a broad range of salary: Mention broad salary using phrases such as  “ in mid-6 figures”, “ For last 3 years, my compensation has ranged from $ 2 million to $ 4 million”.  Then you should consider asking “ Since you brought this up, do you mind sharing what is the indicative budget you have in mind for the position.”
  3. Bring your own question after every 3rd question: Putting forward your own question after every 2nd or 3rd question make sure that you build a co-communication & enable the audience to develop a trust in you since it demonstrates your leadership skills. You can ask questions such as
    • “ Since we are discussing this,–”
    • “ It is quite interesting to note that , however I wanted to know–”
  4. Maintain a calm & cool posture: Having a calm posture & not showing frustration goes a long way in indicating to your audience how you handle stress. While communicating with them, consider including phrases such as:
    • I am sure that will not be an problem
    • I am confident that it can be worked out.
  5. Consider asking the following questions during the interview
    • Can you throw light on qualities & background one would need to possess to perform exceptionally in this role.
    • Tell me about your corporate culture & ethos which makes working for this company a winning proposition
    • If you hire me, what do you expect me to achieve in the next 6 months.
  6. Conclude the discussion on a promising note: At the time of concluding the discussion, say something great either about the company, their culture, positive feedback you have heard or product & service. Do not forget to mention that you are enthusiastic & looking forward to positive feedback on your profile for the target position.
  7. Follow up with a thank-you letter: Do not forget to send them a thank-you letter after your interaction. The letter should summarize some vital aspects you discussed during the discussion & remind them of your noteworthy achievements that demonstrates how your accomplishment & expertise are aligned with their organisation’s long term goals. Last but not the least, you should also include third party testimonials which are considered necessary to gain the trust.
